Vashon Library Children's Book Club

Each month, explore a culture or topic by sharing a book together. In October, celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by reading and discussing How Tia Lola Came to (Visit) Stay, by Julia Alvarez. Ten-year-old Miguel is at first embarrassed by his colorful aunt, Tia Lola from the Dominican Republic but when she arrives after his parents' divorce, he learns to love her. Read the book ahead of time if you can, but stop in anyway for discussion and activities to explore South American cultures.
